Giving Back to Africa was founded by Drs. Ann Marie Thomson and Jim Calli. Ann Marie was born and raised in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and her parents worked there for nearly 40 years in the fields of education and health care. Giving Back to Africa is a result of her deep desire to give back to the Congolese all that they had given her throughout the eighteen years she lived there as a child. Having benefitted herself so much through both the formal and informal education she received in Congo, she was convinced that investing in Congolese youth through service-centered education was the most effective way to give back.
In 2011, Giving Back to Africa launched a five-year commitment with the Centre Salisa / PAID school and orphanage to create a community-based servant leadership educational program and curriculum. and three years experience with Centre Salisa as a site for university students with whom we worked during a pilot project introducing service learning activities and leadership development.
(GBA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the long-term mission of educating young people in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). In partnership with local Congolese educational institutions and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), our goal is to empower GBA beneficiaries – through service-centered education – to become servant-leaders capable of taking control of their own lives while serving as change agents in their local communities and throughout the nation.
